What is it?
I offer my services to companies on a consulting basis. The aim is to cover short-term needs or address a specific issue where required internal resources are not available.
Why use consultants? Why use Richard?
Consultants bring specific expertise to companies, often in areas where the company does not warrant a full-time resource, or where the company requires an independent resource. Independent and external resources can be useful for good governance or as a means of gaining fresh and independent views on a project.
Consultants are more expensive than contractors. The additional expense is warranted when the consultants bring vast additional expertise or resource, or when the period for which services are required is short. Companies can and do sign significant consulting agreements with large consultancies. Small consultancies might be more suited to small and specific tasks taking a couple of days through to a few weeks.
Richard comes with many years of diverse experience, gained through corporate, consulting and contracting work. Much of this experience has been gained in fast-changing environments, requiring not only use of formal actuarial training but also research into regulatory requirements, historical company practice and new techniques of dealing with challenges. See the LinkedIn profile (link at the bottom of the page) for further details.
OK, how much?
Consultant rates vary considerably. In the UK hourly rates we've seen vary from £175 for an analyst, to £600+ for senior actuaries giving professional sign-off. VAT would be in addition to that. Most consultancies seem to charge for travel time and cost as well (my perception).
My rates are set within the range outlined above. We would hit the top end for ultra-short tasks (taking less than 5 hours), but scale back significantly for longer projects. When projects hit the three-month stage the rates run into our contracting rates.
We are happy to quote for individual projects as and when required.
